Hi, just came across this, want to put in my two cents for what it's worth. Being a mother myself, and knowing how the biological sex of a baby is determined, I've wondered this often whether it is as if the modern science says, that the mother doesn't have any control over it at all? Science now tells us that the Y chromosome carrying sperm is more agile than the X chromosome carrying sperm, and X is somehow more sturdy, so there has been studies on this which points light to the below 1. Why men working in higher attitudes and environments where they are exposed to a lot of radiation and stress tend to father more girls 2. As we know the sperm can live for around 5 days in the woman's body, there are more chances of a boy being born if an ovum is fertilized by "fresh" sperm, than one from the bunch that has been lying waiting around for the egg to release (coz X is more resilient and Y degrades faster). There also have been studies where nature sets course for one kind of sex over the other to be preferred, as in after a natural calamity or in periods of stress, and I guess we all can say that we must have said at one point in our lives 'oh that's weird, but all of the women seem to be having boys now" or vice versa. Exactly how much can be put to just random chance and coincidence.. it's a pretty good random chance when you think about how nature balances itself even after humans have tried to destroy themselves from within, like the decimation of large numbers of men in how many wars we have fought. So how can we say for sure that the egg or the secretions around the ovum or the particular reproductive environment in a mother's womb doesn't facilitate the selection of the sperm, as in it facilitates or favours one kind over the other now we know how sperm is influenced by environmental factors? And how can that influence come forth, does it come forth through food, medicine, lifestyle factors, stress, does even a particular music or vibration affect it? So when the garbhopanishad says mother's semen, I wonder what it actually is trying to say rather than taking it literally for mother's semen and go "oh that's wrong coz women don't have semen". Just musing :)
